This Week (10/3-10/9)

  • Book Drive with Pi Phi (10/3-10/5): We’re partnering with Pi Beta Phi sorority to help with their philanthropy initiative of “Read > Lead > Achieve”. Pi Phi seeks to imbue a “lifelong love of reading” in young people across the country, and in tandem with Wesley, they are spreading that message on our campus through a book drive this Family Weekend. Look out for a bin and bring your books!

  • Family Weekend Open House (10/4): From 2-5 on Saturday, bring your parents over to help us decorate the Wesley House for fall for a cozy open house. We’re going to have some yummy fall snacks, do some puzzles, and watch a movie together.

  • Faith & Science with Jennifer Secki-Shields (10/5): The nexus where faith meets science is more complicated than ever--the topics are many and the stakes are high. Genesis and evolution. Science and the Bible. Climate change. Vaccinations. Scientific truth. Join us for dinner and conversation as we explore the intersection of faith and science. Jennifer Secki Shields is a Certified Lay Minister who brings her background in science to bear on the work of the church. She is the founder and executive director of Discovery & Faith, a nonprofit organization doing faith and science together for the next generation.

  • Small Group: Marcus J. Borg (10/6): Our SG leader Eira is hosting this semester’s Wesley Small Group every Monday from 5:00-6:00 PM. The focus is on Marcus J. Borg’s Convictions: How I Learned What Matters Most, wherein Borg recounts what underscored the foundations for his faith: hope and transformation. This week’s chapter is number 5, “Jesus is the Norm of the Afterlife”.

  • Ryan’s Roaming Hours (10/7): Wesley’s campus minister, Ryan LaRock, will be at ISC’s Starbucks from 11:30-1:30. Enjoy a chat about faith, school, and more with a complimentary coffee (or other sold drink of your choice) when you stop by! His roaming hours are now every Tuesday.

  • Worship at Wesley! (10/7): Worship will be at 6:00 PM on Tuesdays at Wesley this year! Worship services tend to last 30-45 minutes, with a sermon from Ryan, singing, scripture reading, and optional communion for all; this year will have a more discussion-based focus.

  • Fall Break Service Trip (10/9-11): We’re going to Blacksburg! Join us from Oct. 9-11th to help uplift the local community surrounding MVP. We will be partnering with POWHR to examine the “restoration work” implemented by MVP with drones, looking for sink holes and examining water quality. We will also be helping out at a local community garden. All expenses will be covered and the trip will be accessible and allergen friendly. Hope to see you there! Fill out the interest form here: Fall Break Interest Form.
